Garo: Honoo no Kokuin Episode 1 Review

Garo anime review

Garo: Honoo no Kokuin is a 24 episode anime that aired in 2014 in Japan. The story follows the life of a young boy, Leon, who was born during a witch hunt that killed his mother. Basically, it’s all about the witch hunters vs witches vs demons. Witches in this setting are those who are tasked to seal away demons. Demons have a demon form that look animal/demonic except after they eat a human, in which case they can then take on the form of the human they consumed.

Episode 1 starts off very strong, with a witch burning. The setting is explained a bit through some demon killing scenes which were very dynamic and exciting. The main characters have been introduced but so far remain mysterious. There is as yet very little known about Leon or the other characters.

The art and animation are pretty good. I did dislike some conspicuous CG at the start with the horse humping extremely high up in the air but most of the animation is excellent. The character design is just the usual stuff, with the location being a typical medieval fantasy town with a European look. The art really shines, though in the knight’s armor. It’s quite detailed and fluid. The demons are appropriately inhuman and scary-looking.

The voice acting is good. For some weird reason the opening and ending songs are extremely weird – not sure why.

The tone of the anime is very serious and dark. There is no humor at all. There are some semi-nude scenes but everything is covered up.

Garo: Honoo no Kokuin Episode 1 Review – Conclusion

The first episode of Garo: Honoo no Kokuin starts off strong, with a somber mood and tragic story. The art and voice acting are good but so far the characters are not too interesting. Rating: 6/10 (slightly above average)
