The Traitor Baru Cormorant by Seth Dickinson is one of those books I recently read and found interesting. The story is that of girl, Baru, who lived an idyllic life in an island with her mothers and fathers. One day traders from the Empire of Masks arrive. They bring superior trading goods with them but the catch is that they only use the Empire’s currency. Gradually, the Empire takes over the local economy. When a deadly plague appears, it’s merely the final blow that makes the Empire’s conquest complete.
Baru is a smart girl who is singled out very young to be educated by the Empire’s school, this is a fast track for her to become one of its top bureaucrats.
The Traitor Baru Cormorant is pretty good. I wouldn’t say that it’s the very best that I have read but it’s fast-paced, well-written, and has interesting characters.
Postaday writing prompt:
Scars – Baru has many, many emotional scars. In her heart she wants to be an island girl who is loyal to their culture but outwardly she has to become a loyal lackey of the Empire. Will her emotional scars be worth it? I look forward to reading the next book.
